Silver Falls 5/27

Wow! This place is a must see it's huge and has trails all over the place. We arrived way before check-in time so we drove over to the South Falls day use side. Because it was Memorial Weekend the place was filling up with cars and people. People where setting up at the picnic areas and hiking the trails to the falls. We haven't seen so many people for awhile. It reminds me of the zoo.

"Silver Falls State Park is a state park in the U.S. state of Oregon, located near Silverton, about 20 miles east-southeast of Salem. It is the largest state park in Oregon with an area of more than 9,000 acres, and it includes more than 24 miles of walking trails, 14 miles of horse trails, and a 4-mile bike path." "The popular trail through Silver Falls State Park's forested canyons visits 10 spectacular waterfalls, five more than 100 feet high. The path even leads through mossy caverns behind the falls' shimmering silver curtains." I'm using their words as I'm tired. zzz

We hiked to the South Falls from the parking lot along with lots of other people. South Falls is a 177 foot drop, the trail goes behind it and around both sides. It was pretty spectacular. Hiked back to the cafe and shared a sandwich, ok wait ,we ate pie and took the sandwich back to the RV. It was close to 4pm and we went to check in at the overnight side of the park across the road.

Day 2:  We got up early and packed up and got the RV ready to leave. Then we got on our bikes and rode off to check out the other falls. We were on a bike trail then not and had to walk the bikes some. I was thinking this is a pretty rough trail for bikes. When we came out into a parking lot there was a sign on the trail we came off of that said no bikes. Oh well.  We locked the bikes and hiked the loop to six of the ten falls. We ran into about 10 hikers, nothing like the crowd from yesterday. Most of the hikers were locals out for a morning hike. We met a couple, Maria and her husband, who were from Nevada City, CA. They happen to be our neighbors at the campground. After the loop hike, we got on our bikes and rode back to the campground. We got back 5 minutes to check out time. What accidental great timing. We put the bikes on the rack and took off to our next local.
